“FROZEN” (ミュージカル『アナと雪の女王』)

Shiki Theatre Company

Based on the 2013 animated feature film, the Disney musical “FROZEN” premiered on Broadway in March 2018. In 2020, Shiki Theatre Company and Disney will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their partnership. What is true love to save the frozen world – the story of two sisters bound by a bond will once again bring love and inspiration to Japan.

Elsa and Anna, the young princesses of the Kingdom of Arendelle, are two very close sisters.
One night, Elsa, who has the magical power to manipulate snow and ice, accidentally casts a spell on her sister Anna’s head. To save Anna, who is now as cold as ice, the queen summons the “Hidden Ones.” Their chief, Pabbie, removes the spell placed on Anna and her memory of it.
Elsa, terrified of her power, begs Pabbie to remove the magic, but he tells her that it is part of her and cannot be removed.

“Aladdin” (ミュージカル『アラジン』)

The Broadway production of “Aladdin” has been one of the top-ranked shows since its opening in March 2014, and it is a hit musical that lives up to its name with overwhelming support from modern audiences. The stage version of “Aladdin” has been carefully crafted to enhance the original animated film by carefully portraying the characters, their emotions, and their relationships with each other. This makes the story a human drama with even more depth.
Story

Agrabah is a mysterious and enchanting city surrounded by desert.
In the downtown area, there was a young man named Aladdin. To make ends meet, he and his friends repeatedly steal from the marketplace and are chased by the guards. However, he yearns for his mother, who has just passed away and vows to become a decent person someday.
Meanwhile, Jasmine, the princess of the Kingdom of Agrabah, feels the strain of life in the royal palace. The king urges her to get married, but she is bound by law and can only marry someone with the rank of “prince.” As an intelligent and independent woman, she finds this unbearable. She longs with all her heart to be free, so she finally escapes from the royal palace and goes down to the city.

“THE LION KING” (ミュージカル『ライオンキング』)

The Japanese production of “THE LION KING” made its premiere in 1998 by Shiki Theatre Company. Following the original production on Broadway, it was the first international production of this title, and opened at the Shiki Theatre HARU. “THE LION KING” passed the milestone of a cumulative total of 13,000 performances in Japan. The show continues to set unprecedented records even today.
Story

The vast savannah of Africa.
While Rafiki sings the hymn of life that goes around and around, all the animals gather at Pride Rock to celebrate the birth of Simba. However, one person is not happy about the birth of the future king.
The whole of the Pride Lands, a kingdom filled with light, is before him. Father King Mufasa teaches his son the principles of “the Circle of Life.”
“When the lion dies, it becomes grass, and the herbivore eats the grass, and the lion eats the herbivore. Everything is connected to this incredible, ever-revolving harmony of life. As a king, you should understand this and respect all life.”, as he says.

“The Beauty and the Beast” (ミュージカル『美女と野獣』)

The Disney musical “Beauty and the Beast” is being staged at the Maihama Amphitheater in the Tokyo Disney Resort (R) for a long run starting in October 2022. Oriental Land Co., Ltd operates the Maihama Amphitheater.

The theater where “The Beauty and the Beast” will be performed is not in Tokyo but in Maihama, Chiba. Maihama is accessible from Tokyo Station.

Story

Once upon a time, a young and beautiful prince lived in a shining castle in a land. The prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind. One cold night, a shabby older woman came to the castle and begged for lodging in exchange for a single rose. The prince turns away the older woman, who tells him not to judge people by their appearance. Still, just as he tries to get rid of her again, she transforms into a sorceress, turning the prince into a hideous beast and the servants into things. She says, “Before the roses fall, the prince will die. If the prince does not love and be loved before the rose falls, the spell will never be broken, and he will never be human again.
One day, Belle, a beautiful and intelligent girl from a nearby village, wanders into the castle. The servants entertain her, offering her a chance to break the spell. Meanwhile, the Beast gradually falls in love with Belle. Still, he is troubled by his inability to express his love and suffers from the shame of his hideous appearance.
Belle escapes from the castle and is surrounded by a pack of wolves in the forest. Just as she is about to flee, a wild beast rushes in and saves her. Belle returns to the castle and tends to the wounded Beast.
The two realize each other’s kindness and gradually begin to feel each other’s heart. However, the roses are falling day by day, and the Beast is in danger. Will the day ever come when they will love and be loved, and the spell will be broken?

“The Phantom of the Opera” (ミュージカル『オペラ座の怪人』)

Shiki Theatre Company

Based on the novel by French writer Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece musical “The Phantom of the Opera” depicts the tragic love between the “Phantom” who lives deep underground in the Paris Opera House and the young diva Christine. Shiki Theatre Company will present the production in Yokohama for the first time in about seven years since 2017.

The theater where “The Phantom of the Opera” will be performed is not in Tokyo but in Yokohama, Kanagawa. Yokohama is accessible from Tokyo Station.

Story

Onstage at the Paris Opera House in 1905. The property of the opera house is being auctioned off. An older man in a wheelchair stops to look at one of the items, a music box.
Half a century ago, on the stage of the Paris Opera House, a rehearsal for the opera “Hannibal” was underway.
However, outside the splendor of the stage, a series of mysterious incidents are taking place that are believed to be the work of the “Phantom of the Opera. The prima donna Carlotta, annoyed at the manager’s lack of action, announces that she will not perform in the opera.

Story

Paris, 1899.
The beauty of decadence, the incomparable luxury of the shows, the world of bohemians, aristocrats, playboys, and hoodlums.
Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub, and Christian, an American composer, meet at the Moulin Rouge and fall madly in love.
However, Satine’s patron, Harold Zidler, the club’s owner and promoter, has a problem.
The Duke (Duke of Monroth), a wealthy aristocrat, tears them apart.
The Duke believed that everything he wanted, even Satine, could be bought with money.
Christian, who loves Satine, tries to win her heart by putting on a glamorous musical show with his bohemian friends (Toulouse-Lautrec, a day-living but talented painter, and Santiago, the best tango dancer in Paris) and saving Moulin Rouge from a disaster. The story is about a young girl who tries to win the heart of Satine by putting on a glamorous musical show with Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago, the best tango dancer in Paris.

The Shiki Theatre Company is adapting Kazuhiro Fujita’s medium-length comic book “The Ghost and the Lady (The Black Museum)” into a musical. The production is directed by Scott Schwartz, who also directed the musical “The Bells of Notre Dame.”
Story

The time is the 19th century. The setting is England.
The famous theater ghost, Gray, appears at the Drury Lane Theater. He is a former dueling agent who loves the theater and lost his life in a betrayal.
A young lady visits Gray and begs him to kill her. She is Flo, who has a strong sense of mission in nursing but has almost lost the meaning of life due to her family’s contempt and opposition to her profession. Gray refuses at first but accepts her wish on the condition that he will kill her if she falls to the depths of despair.
The thought of death makes Flo determined to stick to her beliefs, and she and Gray are sent to a field hospital in the Crimea. The two gradually begin to feel a bond between them. Still, what awaits them there is an impoverished environment and the presence of a military doctor who plans to kill Flo, who is working hard to reform the hospital. And a particular ghost, just like Gray, is standing right beside them…

French Musicals

“Romeo & Juliet” (ミュージカル『ロミオ&ジュリエット』)

The French musical “Romeo & Juliet,” based on Shakespeare’s masterpiece, will be performed in 2024 with Yuta Koseki (Instagram: yuta_koseki_68) and Kurumu Okamiya (X: @okamiya_kurumu) as Romeo and Sakura Kiryu (Instagram: kiryusakura_official) and Iroha Okuda (Official blog) of Nogizaka 46 as Juliet, respectively, in the W cast.
Story

The setting is Verona, an Italian city in the 14th century. The Montague and Capulet families are engaged in a blood feud.
His friend invites Romeo of the Montague family and sneaks into the Capulet family’s masked ball.
There, he meets Juliet, the only daughter of the Capulets, and they immediately fall in love.
After the masquerade, Romeo sneaks into the Capullets’ orchard and happens to find himself under the balcony of Juliet’s room. There, he overhears her confession of love as she talks to herself.
Saddened that the man she fell in love with is her enemy, Romeo irresistibly appears before her, confides his feelings, and they pledge their love to each other…
Romeo consults Friar Lawrence, who sees in their love a glimmer of hope to put an end to the strife between the two families and helps her. The two are married in secret at Friar Lawrence’s house.
On their way home, however, they become embroiled in a dispute, and Lady Capulet’s nephew Tybalt kills Romeo’s best friend, Marcus. Romeo, having lost his best friend, turns on him and avenges Marcusio’s death.
Romeo is then banished from Verona for life for the murder.
Juliet’s father, Capulet, orders her to marry Paris, a relative of the Grand Duke. Juliet’s father, Capulet, orders her to marry Paris, a relative of the Grand Duke. Juliet seeks help from Lawrence, who offers her a deadly plan: take a potion that puts her in a state of suspended animation for two hours, be buried in a mausoleum as a dead person, and upon awakening, elope with Romeo, who comes for her upon receiving the news.
On the eve of her wedding to Paris, Juliet, bracing herself for death, takes the potion and drinks herself to death.
The next day, the Capillettes held a funeral service.
Romeo, who was reunited with Juliet in her altered state, followed her, drank the poison, and died. Shortly after that, Juliet woke up to see Romeo without breath, and realizing what had happened, Juliet killed herself with Romeo’s dagger and followed him.
The two families regretted the strife that had sent them to their deaths and vowed to reconcile.

South Korean Musicals

These are South Korean musicals that will be performed in Japanese.

“Navillera” (ミュージカル『ナビレラ』)

In 2016, “Navillera” began serialization as a web manga on a South Korean portal site and received a great response, including a perfect score from readers. 2019 will see a musical adaptation by the Seoul Performing Arts Company, which has a reputation for musical adaptations based on novels and manga, and it was performed again in 2021 after receiving favorable reviews. Finally, in May 2024, the first Japanese version of the musical will be staged.
Story

Lee Chae-rok, who aspires to become a first-class ballet dancer, is talented but has fallen into a slump, unable to see a future in the harsh reality surrounding him. Meanwhile, Shim Duk-chul, who has worked for his family for many years as a postman, reaches retirement age and begins to think about the rest of his life.
One day, Duk-chul passes by a dance studio and is captivated by the sight of Cheol-geok dancing there. Duk-chul had always wanted to be a ballet dancer as a child, but his family was too poor to make it happen. He visits the studio where Cheolok used to dance and tells Cheolok that he wants to take ballet lessons, but Cheolok is not interested. The head of the ballet studio, seeing Dok-chul’s enthusiasm, asks Chelok to become Dok-chul’s ballet instructor and Dok-chul to become Chelok’s manager.
Thus begins a series of ballet lessons between the young and the old, a seemingly strange pair.

The album was highly acclaimed as one of the most popular albums of the 1990s for its melodies and powerful sound.
Story

Will is having trouble adjusting to school in a small town in rural Nebraska. Mike is on the baseball team, athletic, and popular with his friends.
Mike has already decided to leave Nebraska for college. Will, however, needs help seeing what he wants to do.
The two had never been in contact, but they began interacting through a mix tape that Mike gave Will at his high school graduation.
Will’s parents are divorced, and he has a single mother, while his father’s pressure determines Mike’s career path.
As they spend time together, they both realize that they can be themselves when they are alone, and they grow closer.
Just before Mike leaves for Lincoln to attend college, Will writes a letter to Mike but is discovered by a baseball team member.
Distraught, Will distances himself from Mike, but their fates are connected through music.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (舞台『ハリー・ポッターと呪いの子』)

The stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which has thrilled fans and won theater awards worldwide, finally opens with an original Japanese cast. The play is an original story created by J.K. Rowling (X: @jk_rowling), the author of the “Harry Potter” series. It is the eighth story in the series and the first time a new Harry Potter story has been depicted using the “stage” method.
Story

Nineteen years after Harry, Ron, and Hermione saved the wizarding world, a series of unsettling events reminiscent of the dark days of yore are upsetting people.
Harry Potter, who works for the Ministry of Magic, is now the father of three children. His second son, Albus, who will enter Hogwarts this year, rebels against his father as if to contradict his destiny of being born into a family of heroes.
