“Back to the Future” will be performed in Tokyo from April 2025!

The Shiki Theatre Company announced on April 24, 2024, that it will present “Back to the Future” from April 2025 at the JR East Shiki Theater AKI (Minato-ku, Tokyo).

The musical, adapted from the classic science fiction film classic that is still loved around the world, opened in Manchester, England, in 2020, opened in London’s West End in 2009, and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2010, the most prestigious award in the British theater world. The Broadway production opened in August 2011.

Many members of the film’s production team participated in creating this film, and the screenplay was written by Bob Gale, who also wrote the script for the film version. The film has been reimagined as a musical comedy while retaining the charm of the movie. Robert Zemeckis, who directed the film, is involved as one of the producers.

The music is by Alan Silvestri, who has been in charge of film music throughout the series. Glen Ballard, a newcomer to the musical, has joined the cast to create new numbers that sing the characters’ emotions. Overtures, “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode,” familiar from the film, continue to be used in the musical version to thrill audiences.

The production is directed by Jon Land (winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for “Yulin Town”) and choreographed by Chris Bailey.

The time machine “DeLorean” is an indispensable part of this production. The car’s body has been meticulously recreated. In the powerful time-travel scene, the latest technology is utilized to create an immersive experience with unprecedented speed, as if the car were an attraction, with the visuals, lighting, and sound beautifully integrated into the presentation.
